Monitor - Control - Automate

Home Automation

I got an idea this morning that is so simple and yet so powerful that I'm finding it hard to write this blog instead of doing the actual coding!

All major telephone carriers allow a phone to send a text message to an email address (this I did not know), which means any phone can become your Z-Command remote control. Even the cheapest phone, not a PDA phone as is currently supported by the mobile interface.

The end user will send a text message with the node ID to be controlled and the new value to set the level to. If the device is a thermostat, the mode (cool, heat etc) can be specified as well. Z-Command will respond with a confirmation text message so you know the command succeeded.

It will be possible to activate a scene or query devices as well.

Look for this feature in Z-Command in a couple of weeks.

The Z-Command main interface can now be offered in any language and is now available in English and Danish.

A big thank you to Kim Frølund of homee.dk for helping with the Danish translation.

Z-Command Backend is very robust and feature-full. This opens the door for several interface possibilities. For example, the current offering has both a Microsoft Silverlight and an Ajax based frontend.

One other possiblity that is sure to follow is a voice recognition interface that allows an end user to speak into small hand-held device which will then transmit the sound via Wi-Fi to the Z-Command GX1 for processing. Since all that is required in the hand-held device is a microphone and RF circuit, it will be very small. So someday, Z-Command will allow users to speak to their house, literarily. Since the "remote control" will be hand-held, possibly with a "Listen" button, the chances of error from ambient sound will be greatly minimized.

I can't wait to say "front porch light, go off at 8 am!"

Tulips (oil on canvas). Painting spring in winter can have a magically uplifting effect!

Now how can I harness this spring energy for home automation ideas? Cool
