I got an idea this morning that is so simple and yet so powerful that I'm finding it hard to write this blog instead of doing the actual coding! All major telephone carriers allow a phone to send a text message to an email address (this I did not know), which means any phone can become your Z-Command remote control. Even the cheapest phone, not a PDA phone as is currently supported by the mobile interface. The end user will send a text message with the node ID to be controlled and the new value to set the level to. If the device is a thermostat, the mode (cool, heat etc) can be specified as well. Z-Command will respond with a confirmation text message so you know the command succeeded. It will be possible to activate a scene or query devices as well. Look for this feature in Z-Command in a couple of weeks. |
